GLAAD is thrilled to announce our 2018-2019 GLAAD Campus Ambassadors! The program, which started in 2016, begins its third year by welcoming 143 students from 42 states and 113 college campuses across the U.S.
GLAAD Campus Ambassadors help build sustainable and inclusive programming for LGBTQ and ally university students and youth, all while learning GLAAD’s best practices on leveraging media to create change.
GLAAD’s 2017 Accelerating Acceptance Report found 20% of young people identify as LGBTQ. GLAAD's youth programming works to engage, inform, and inspire this next generation of LGBTQ changemakers.
With these advocates, GLAAD is building networks of young LGBTQ and ally activists to promote LGBTQ acceptance through the media in youth communities nationwide. Together, we leverage media to ensure young voices are leading the charge to accelerate acceptance.
In the program’s first two years, Campus Ambassadors led campaigns to inform and engage students in LGBTQ-inclusive activism, emboldened their campuses to stand up against anti-LGBTQ bullying on Spirit Day, and released an open letter to Congress through the media demanding sensible gun reform in the wake of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
GLAAD Campus Ambassadors are critical to GLAAD’s mission of accelerating acceptance for LGBTQ people. By producing dynamic, educational media content through GLAAD’s digital platform, amp, Campus Ambassadors serve as representatives for LGBTQ youth and, with support from GLAAD, reach a national audience. Beyond amp, Campus Ambassadors have been featured in publications and outlets such as Billboard, CNN, Huffington Post, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Entertainment Tonight, Essence, INTO, MTV, Seventeen, Teen Vogue, them, Autostraddle, and more.
GLAAD is proud to work with our ambassadors across the country to register voters, educate on local LGBTQ issues on campus and in the media to increase the youth voter turnout in the 2018 Midterm Elections and beyond.
